Chester, Pa. — Dániel Gazdag made history Wednesday night. More importantly, he helped the Philadelphia Union to another victory.
With help from Gazdag, the Union beat Atlanta United 4-1 at Subaru Park.
He scored his 17th goal of the season. This helped the Union stay unbeaten at home.
The Philadelphia-based team improved to 16-9-4 this season. They are now 10-0-5 at home.
Following Wednesday night’s win, the team clinched a playoff berth.
Union have now scored the most goals in a season in team history with 61. The previous season’s record was 58.
Atlanta fell to 8-11-9 on the season. This team has only one road win all season.
With the Houston Dynamo beating LAFC, the Union and LAFC are tied at 57 points in the Supporter’s Shield race. It goes to the team with the most points.
LAFC has six games left to play. Union still has five games to play. If they are tied on points, then MLS will consider the wins and goal differential as tiebreakers.
Ahead of the game, Union goalkeeper Andre Blake was recognized for his 200th game with the team. He is the second player in his team’s history to do so.
Gazdag is the first Union player to score 17 goals in a season. Moreover, he also has 25 goal contributions on the season, according to OptaJack, which is the most ever by a Union player.
Julián Carranza and Mikael Uhre also scored. Late in the game, Nathan Harriel became the first Union right-back to score in four years.
Harriel’s goal was his first in MLS.
