What would be your specialized topic on Mastermind often comes up in conversation.
Music by Kylie Minogue 1998-2017, Big Brother (2000-2010), The History of Drum and Bass and works by Angela Carter were all chosen by the contestants.
And now you might have your chance to sit in the famous black chair and be forensically grilled by host Clive Myrie.
Casting is underway for the next BBC2 quiz TV series which will celebrate 50 years in production this year.
If you’re accepted, you’ll be following in the footsteps of Steve Goddard, a former Oxford-based candidate, Wolvercote alderman and senior lecturer in French at the University of Oxford, who came out on top in his 2020 episode.
Mr. Goddard faced three other candidates, including one of his former students.
His specialist subject, cult British sci-fi show Blake’s 7, left him in last place, but in the general knowledge cycle, where he was quizzed on everything from Pixar to politics, he wore his score at 20, without a pass.
This is what gave him the edge over his nearest rival.
Speaking at the end of the show, he said it was “really a shock” to win, adding: “I honestly didn’t know I won until the very end when [former host John Humphrys] announced the result.
“It was so tight. Really great fun.”
He encouraged anyone considering applying for the show to “go for it” and said it was “such a buzz” if “a bit scary”.
The type of people the Hat Trick/Hindsight production company is looking for “need general knowledge, but we’re really interested in your three specialist topics – the wider the range, the better!”
As the producers might not be able to give you your first choice of specialist topic, you need to have mastered three different topics – all suitable for broadcast with enough information about them to be doable.
In addition to regular quizzes, they seek to recruit a wide range of people and are committed to making the programs as inclusive as possible.

After you submit your application, one of the casting team members may contact you to arrange a Zoom audition.
This will involve a short general knowledge quiz and the opportunity for them to find out more about why you have chosen your specialist subjects.
The audition will only take 15-20 minutes “and is very relaxed and a lot of fun!”
Closing of applications on Monday, May 9 at midnight.
