Hanoi (VNA) – The Culture and Education Committee of the National Assembly (AN) submitted to the NA Standing Committee a report claiming that many voters, pundits, scientists and teachers disagreed with a plan to make history a selective subject in the high school curriculum.

The report said that during the implementation of the 2018 general education program, many voters as well as the public expressed concerns about the plan, which is expected to be carried out in the school year 2022-2023, believing that it will affect the education of national patriotism and historical traditions among students.

He analyzed that as history becomes a optional subject in upper secondary education, there will be three possibilities.

In the first, if students choose history as one of five selective subjects, they will have 210 lessons in total over three academic years, 70 more than the 2006 general education curriculum.

In the second scenario where students select history as one of the five selective subjects and make it one of their thematic subjects for further study, they will follow 315 lessons in three years, i.e. 175 lessons more than the program of general education in 2006.

In the last possibility, when students do not choose history, they will have no lessons and historical knowledge will only be combined with other subjects.

As part of efforts to accomplish the task assigned by the NA in supervising the renovation of curricula and textbooks for upper secondary education, the committee held consultations with experts, scientists and teachers, and attended a Government Office meeting on the subject of History in the General Education Curriculum, the report said.

The committee pointed out that compared to the 2006 general education curriculum, the teaching of history in the 2008 general education curriculum has many new contents and has been simplified, emphasizing the development of students’ abilities and morals through renewed teaching, testing and assessment methods.

The report points out that the majority of voters, experts, scientists and teachers disagreed with the plan to make history a selective subject in the high school curriculum. They underlined the importance of the subject in the political and ideological education of the younger generations, inspiring their patriotism and national pride, educating them in cultural traditions and history, giving them the ability to think, act and behave properly in social life, thus forming the virtues of Vietnamese citizens, citizens of the world, the report said.

He pointed out that if students choose not to take history lessons, they will miss the chance to access important and educational knowledge that is meaningful to them at their age.

The report also pointed out that in countries around the world, history remains a compulsory subject in their national high school curriculum.

Therefore, the NA Culture and Education Committee requested the Ministry of Education and Training to acquire ideas from people, historical experts and NA deputies, in keeping history as a compulsory subject in the 20218 general education program with appropriate knowledge content, while continuing to renovate methods. to teach, examine and assess for the subject and to inspire their love for history./.
