This year’s ‘Pitru Paksha’ or ‘Shradh’ started today and is celebrated by Hindus all over India and other parts of the world. Hindus send food offerings in the form of ‘tarpan’ (prayers) to their ancestors during the 15-day period before Navratri. Which is known as “Pitr Paksha” or “Shhraadh”.

There are 15 days of Shradh from the full moon to the next new moon. On this day, at sunrise, sesame, rice and other foodstuffs are offered to the ancestors. This is followed by ‘puja’, ‘havan’ and ‘daan’. No celebrations are allowed during this time and nothing new can be purchased.

According to the Hindu calendar, Pitru Paksha is celebrated fifteen days after ‘Ganesh Utsav’ and occurs in the second ‘Paksha’ of the Hindu lunar month of Bhadrapada (September). This year, “Pitru Paksha” will take place from September 10 to 25. When the nine day Navratri festival will begin. ‘Mahalay’ means the transition between ‘Pitra Paksha’ and ‘Maternal Paksha’.

History of Pitru Paksha 2022

The legend says that when Karna, the hero of Mahabharata, died and entered heaven, he was shocked to learn that any food he had touched. He had turned to gold, which made him hungry.

When Karna and Surya asked Indra the reason, he explained that although Karna gave gold to his ancestors in the ‘Pitru Paksha’. He had never given them any food and as a result they cursed him.

Recognizing the ignorance of his ancestors, Karna swore to return to earth for 15 days to perform ‘Shradh’ ceremonies and offer food and water in his honor.

The 15 day period became known as ‘Pitru Paksha’ at that time.

Meaning of Pitru Paksha 2022

Three generations of ancestors are worshiped during Pitru Paksha. According to ancient texts, the ‘Pitriloka’ between heaven and earth, ruled by Yama, the god of death, is the abode of the souls of the last three generations. The generations before these three generations live in paradise and because of this, they are not offered a tarpan.

Pitru Paksha 2022: Rituals
The eldest son of the family wakes up early in the morning and takes a sacred bath.
Wear clean clothes for worship.
Place an ancestor’s photo on a wooden table facing south.
Add black sesame seeds and barley.
Pind is prepared from rice balls made with ghee, honey, rice, goat’s milk, sugar and barley.
This is followed by a tarpan followed by a pind where water is mixed with flour, barley, kush and black sesame.
Pind and Tarpan are provided for the needy and the poor.
