A prequel to a 1980 original film is the most-watched premiere on Hulu. Here’s a look at how “Prey” stacks up for the disney-supported streaming platform.

What happened: “Prey”, the latest installment in the “Predator” franchise that began in 1987 with Arnold Schwarzeneggerwas originally slated to hit theaters.

However, it was released straight to Hulu on August 5 – and fans were thrilled.

Hulu is now presenting “Prey” as its biggest three-day premiere in the history of the streaming platform. The film, starring Amber Middle of Thundernow holds the record for most minutes viewed in the first three days on Hulu.

“Prey” breaks a record set in April by new Hulu title “The Kardashians.”

The Predator prequel was also heralded as the most-watched film premiere on Star+, a streaming platform for international territories under the Disney+ brand.

Hulu is majority owned by The Walt Disney Company SAY. The two Hulu companies didn’t share specific numbers of minutes or hours watched for “Prey,” something that varies from streamer to streamer. Most streamers don’t share actual numbers with Netflix Inc. NFLX being the exception with its weekly top ten report.

Why it matters: Disney CEO Bob Chapeck has made a strategy for delivering shows and movies based on existing IP a theme for Disney and its streaming platforms.

The Predator franchise has a mixed history at the box office, which may have played into the decision to put the title on the streaming platform. “The Predator,” released in 2018, grossed $51 million domestically and $160 worldwide, according to BoxOfficeMojo.

“Prey” has generated significant buzz and good reviews, which may increase viewership in the future. The movie is the number one movie or show on IMDb, a movie database owned by Amazon.com Inc. AMZN.

“Prey” has a rating of 7.2 (out of 10) on IMDb and earned ratings of 92% and 80% respectively from critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The new movie is the highest rated in the Predator franchise on Rotten Tomatoes.

“The Kardashians” launched in April after leaving cable channel E! after 15 years and 20 seasons to be exclusive to Hulu. The new show will see 40 episodes across 10 seasons under its original deal.

Hulu could get some momentum with several hit shows and movies exclusive to the platform. Disney announced that Hulu ended the third quarter with 46.2 million free and paid subscribers, up 8% year-over-year.

Hulu could also get a boost when Disney announced plans and pricing for the upcoming ad-supported Disney+ launch. Disney is putting more emphasis on bundles, which have options to add Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu.
