Navi Mumbai, April 17 (IANS): Former England off-spinner Graeme Swann has praised Punjab Kings star fly-half Shikhar Dhawan during the ongoing IPL 2022, calling him ‘Mr IPL’ and added that the left-handed fly-half started to roar with the bat for his new franchise.

In Punjab’s campaign so far in the IPL 2022, Dhawan is the top scorer with 197 runs in five games at an average of 39.40 and a strike rate of 133.10. In their game against Mumbai Indians in Pune, Dhawan topped the score with a stroke-filled 70 and was involved in a 97-point opening stand with captain Mayank Agarwal to set the foundation for a win. of 12 points.

Now, ahead of Sunday afternoon’s game against Sunrisers Hyderabad at DY Patil Stadium, Dhawan is 19 points away from becoming the second batter after Virat Kohli to reach the 6,000 point mark in IPL history.

To date, Dhawan has amassed 5,981 carries at an average of 34.97 and a strike rate of 126.85 in 197 IPL matches. He even holds the record for most four touchdowns in tournament history with 673 fours.

“Obviously he’s in a shape of his life. I mean he played a pink suit dog in the IPL. I mean he’s Mr. IPL (to me) and I love it watching him every minute of his bat like that (when he’s in his element),” Swann said on Star Sports’ Cricket Live.

Praising the wide array of strokes experienced Dhawan has in his repertoire, Swann claimed that people tuning into IPL 2022 are seeing “Vintage Dhawan” strokes from his bat.

“As soon as Shikhar Dhawan plays a shot to extra coverage for a six early in his innings, you know he’s going to have a great time. And those are vintage Shikhar Dhawan shots. He’s brilliant on the court, brilliant on the square, this little ramp on top, a kick on the side of the leg. It’s amazing.

Punjab Kings are Dhawan’s fifth team in the IPL after Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals), Mumbai Indians, now defunct Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad before returning to Delhi.
