STEPHEN ROBINSON insists it’s his fault St Mirren haven’t been good enough – but he feels they can still make history with a great finish.

The Buddies’ loss to Rangers means they have won just once in eight games since Robbo took over from Jim Goodwin.

Saturday’s results had already condemned them to the last six and they remain just six points clear of second-placed St Johnstone.

But they are also only two points behind Hibs, seventh, and Livingston, eighth.

Robinson said: “I finally take the blame – we’ve won one in eight since I arrived. No excuses, we have to be better.

“I take responsibility for it. It hasn’t been good enough since I arrived. I’m not trying to blame anyone else.

“We have a very small number of players – we only have 14 fit players.

“A lot of teams approach this post-split with a lack of confidence.

“So it’s up to me to revive the boys and find a system that prevents us from conceding as many goals as we have.

“I know people say we are six points from second place, but we are also two points from seventh place.

“We are going to go and reset and aim for seventh place going forward.

“We are more than good enough to finish seventh, which I would add would be the club’s best result for 22 years.”

Against Rangers, the Buddies paid for poor defending early and late in the first half as Kemar Roofe scored twice.

Robinson admits it will now be a return to basics and adds: “We got off to a bad start and then I think we defended very well.


“Rangers were getting frustrated.

“Defensively, I felt we were good in the first half. We were organised, we entered good areas but we didn’t create chances.

“Then the team talk changed completely on the eve of half-time. They were two crosses in the box – they didn’t cut us.

“It’s a theme, which we get by crosses in the box. With our staff, we shouldn’t be.

“We had to chase after the game and Rangers are a very good team who can knock you out.

“We don’t need to be pretty by the end of the season. We just have to try to get as many points as possible.
